Worship Arts Curriculum

As part of the Worship Arts Curriculum, you are required to take either:

One course from Group A
(taking the same course in both the Winter and Spring quarters),

Two courses from Group B
(taking one in the Winter quarter and one in the Spring quarter).

You will, therefore, be asked to choose one course from Group A or two courses (one per quarter) from Group B.

Cadets in Crestmont Band can choose additional course(s) from Group B.

The form you have been given must be returned to Duncan Sutton by Friday, November 3rd.

Sound

Instructors: Richard Bosanko

The course will give the students the basic skills and knowledge required to set up and run the sound equipment necessary for worship. It will also explore how to record a worship service for a CD/Tape ministry and the more contemporary technologies of web and podcasting.

Music Leadership (MU 335)

This course will introduce the student to basic conducting techniques, score reading, brass and vocal pedagogy and rehearsal techniques. Corps music programs and Salvation Army music publications will also be explored.

Music Fundamentals (MU 122)

This course introduces the fundamentals of music theory and prepares students for further study in theory and musicianship. Beginning with pitch and rhythm notation and time signatures, the course will proceed through the keyboard, key signatures, major scales and common musical markings.

Beginner Guitar (MU 387)

This course provides an introduction to music notation and its application to playing the guitar, stringing, tuning and playing techniques and proceeds through pieces and exercises of advancing difficulty for the elementary player. Concepts of music theory and musicianship are emphasized. Chord structures, accompaniment patterns and playing from chord symbols and lead/lyric sheets will also be introduced.

Beginner Brass (MU 381)

This course provides an introduction to music notation and its application to playing a brass instrument, tone production, technique and articulation and proceeds through pieces and exercises of advancing difficulty for the elementary player. Concepts of music theory and musicianship are also emphasized, as is care and maintenance of the instrument.

Instrumental Technique (MU 362)

This course continues the brass player’s development of tone, technique, articulation, and other musical, technical and functional skills using exercises, studies and selected pieces representative of the four Western stylistic periods of music and Salvation Army and Christian repertoires.

Multimedia Ministry (MU 342)

This course is designed to introduce students to the numerous mediums that can be used to enhance the worship experience. As well as looking at existing resources, students will learn the capabilities of these mediums and develop the skills and knowledge to use them in their worship services.

American Sign Language (MU 312)

This is an introductory course in the use of American Sign Language for the deaf. Alphabet and basic word signs are taught, particularly as applied to faith-based education and worship. Aspects of this language can enhance worship for all and this function will also be examined.

Beginner Piano (MU 372)

This course provides an introduction to music notation and its application to playing the piano and proceeds through pieces and exercises of advancing difficulty for the elementary player. Concepts of music theory and musicianship are emphasized. The Simplified Piano Tunebook of The Salvation Army will be introduced, as will chord structures, accompaniment patterns and playing using chord symbols and lead/lyric sheets.

Vocal Ensemble

This course is designed to provide the student with no or limited choral experience an opportunity to learn to sing in an ensemble setting, to improve their singing voice, to develop the ‘inner ear’ and to learn to identify and interpret basic notation, intervals and rhythmic patterns. They will be introduced to The Salvation Army’s vocal publications and the ensemble will be used to contribute to worship through special music numbers on a regular basis.

Crestmont Band

This course is designed to provide the student with no or limited brass band experience an opportunity to learn to play in an ensemble setting, to improve technique, to develop their sense of ensemble (dynamics, tone, intonation, balance and blend) and to learn to identify and interpret, key signatures, notation and rhythmic patterns. Students will also receive information on the history and current spiritual and evangelistic use of the Brass Band within The Salvation Army.
